Loaves and Fishes ~ A Wonderful Ministry

Image
Loaves & Fishes Ministry Multiplying Impact in Sabattus Thanks to Perseverance and Acting in “Significant Ways” SABATTUS---For a ministry with a sole mission of aiding people in crisis in the Sabattus area, Loaves & Fishes, operated by the Dominican Sisters (O.P.), has faced challenge after challenge during the pandemic. Located at the Sisters’ convent on Lisbon Road in Sabattus, Loaves & Fishes has been providing food and clothing to those in need since 1997. The food pantry serves residents of the community who are in need regardless of religious affiliation. When the COVID-19 crisis began, the number of local people in need rose and continued to grow when another area food pantry was forced to close. “Our food pantry clients have become more numerous because of unemployment and because of that closure. More people needed help with housing, rent, utilities, and medical expenses. Mortgages have become a little too high for them right now, risking loss of houses a

Fr. Daniel's Letter to the Parishioners

Image
Dear Parishioners, The Feast of St. Blaise is February 3 rd , which is on Wednesday.   It has been a tradition that we bless throats on the weekend before St. Blaise so that people may take advantage of the graces from the saint.   However, like everything else, it has to be different this year.   The priest will say the blessing over all the people at the end of Mass and then anyone who wanted to be blessed with the candles can come forward, keeping social distancing with masks on and without making any contact, to receive an individual blessing gesture.   It is our attempt to make things as close to normal as possible while respecting the requirements.     It has been wonderful to see more people at Mass each week.   I think that the narrative that was promoted that claimed that Mass is dangerous is not true.   We take all the precautions required of us including marking off pews, wearing masks at all times, and maintaining social distancing.   In all our time doing this, ther

Coats For Kids Project

Image
With the conclusion of this year’s Coats for Kids project, the Holy Family Council 10019 membership, wish to thank all parishioners who donated coats, money or their time and labor. Your efforts contributed to make this project a great success. Over one hundred twenty five children and young teens are now just a bit warmer when they go outdoors to play. Back in September, the council sponsored a drive-thru spaghetti supper which raised over $2300. With your wonderful support, we were able to purchase one hundred twenty five coats. We then distributed, with the aid of the Dominican Sisters, Loaves & Fishes organization forty coats and hats. We brought another forty coats and hats to the Robert Connor Elementary School in Lewiston, the remaining forty five coats and hats were given to the St. Dominic Academy Key Club, for their distribution thru their Adopt Families for Christmas program. We want to especially thank the ladies that donated their time and talent by knitting very bea

Feast of Our Lady of Peace

Image
The Feast of Our Lady of Peace is celebrated annually on January 24. This feast commemorates the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is often represented holding a dove and an olive branch, the symbols of peace. The memorial feast celebration has two dates: July 9 and January 24. While January 24 is the feast day in Hawaii and in some churches of the United States, the rest of the world uses July 9, the date when the original statue of Our Lady of Peace was crowned by the Archbishop of Paris in the name of Pope Saint Pius X.

Fr. Daniel's Letter to his Parishioners

Dear Parishioners, We are now planning for the Lenten Season here in the parish.   This bulletin starts the promotion of the different activities and prayer events in person and online for this coming Lent.   As you can see, it starts with Ash Wednesday on February 17 and the Vatican has given some instructions on how to distribute ashes during a pandemic.   The call to refrain from contact will mean that instead of placing ashes with the sign of the cross on the forehead, we will sprinkle it on top of the head, which has precedent in the Bible and is how they do it in some parts of the world.   In 2 Samuel 13:19 it says “ Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long tunic in which she was clothed. Then, putting her hands to her head, she went away crying loudly.”   Moreover, the phrase, “you are dust and unto dust you will return will be said once at the beginning and not in front of each person.   Even though we will have masks on, it will reduce the amount of time near each oth

Eucharistic Adoration for Life

Image
Eucharistic Adoration for Life: Prayer in Reparation and For Healing on the Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Join Fr. Patrick at Holy Family this Friday— the anniversary of Roe v. Wade— for a time of prayer before the exposed Blessed Sacrament, beginning at 4:30 PM. Scripture readings, some time for silent prayer, the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary for Life, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will round out our parish’s impassioned plea to God for an end to abortion and the respect of all human life.  We anticipate concluding around 5:15 PM. Fr. Michael’s monthly Healing Service will follow at 6:00 PM.  A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. … May an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, … from every family and from the heart of every believer.  Let us…discover anew the humility and the courage to pray and fast so that power from on high will break down the walls of lies and
